Starting and running a business is more time consuming than you can imagine. It takes real discipline to move beyond a one or two person shop and grow exponentially. In order to do it, you need to “Accelerate Your Time”.
So how do you “Accelerate Your Time”? There are no two ways about it you have to do less. To do less, you have to approach tasks in a new way. Ask yourself…
- Do I really have to do this at all?
- Do I have to do this now?
- Do I have to do it myself?
If the answer is “yes” to all of those then get to work. If you really think about the task before you get started though, the answer is almost always going to be “no”. Most things don’t really even need to be done. Most things that really need to be done aren’t the absolute most important thing to get done right now. Most things can be delegated to someone else at a lower cost (over time) than doing it yourself.
Do yourself, your heart, and your family a favor and learn to delegate.
Now it’s not going to be easy to delegate. Delegation in itself will add MORE hours to work day not less – at first. Not to mention there will be tons of times when you think, “Ughh, it’s easier if I just do it myself”!
When I say it takes discipline, the point when you think it’s easier to do it yourself is when you will really be tested. You’ll have a 2 hour thing to do, and you’ll spend 4 hours trying to delegate it and it still won’t be done as good. (Don’t hate the messenger, it’s going to happen)
In the bigger picture though, if you allow this to become your life – a life of doing everything yourself because you’re the only one who can do it right – then you’re going to prove yourself right, and you’re going to have a heart attack to show for it.
Instead think about how spending 4, 10, 20 hours delegating a task now can save you 100 hours over the course of a year. You became an entrepreneur because you have the innate ability to delay gratification. You can look longer term than others. You can see that the pay out comes over time and that you have to have some pain to get to the goal.
